Background of the Study

Language proficiency is a critical factor that influences various aspects of cognitive function, including cognitive flexibility—the ability to adaptively switch between tasks and mental sets. In Nigerian bilingual individuals, proficiency in both an indigenous language and a global language such as English may enhance cognitive flexibility through constant practice in language switching and inhibition. Studies have shown that bilingualism can lead to improvements in executive functions and cognitive control, as bilingual speakers often develop more efficient neural pathways for managing linguistic interference (Oluwaseun, 2023). This study examines how varying levels of language proficiency affect cognitive flexibility in Nigerian bilinguals by administering standardized cognitive tasks alongside language proficiency assessments. By correlating proficiency scores with performance on tasks measuring switching ability and problem-solving, the research aims to delineate the relationship between language skills and cognitive adaptability. The outcomes are expected to inform both educational practices and cognitive training programs, ultimately supporting the cognitive benefits associated with bilingualism (Adebayo, 2024; Umeh, 2023).

Statement of the Problem

Despite evidence suggesting that bilingualism enhances cognitive flexibility, the specific impact of language proficiency on this cognitive function remains underexplored in Nigerian bilingual individuals. Many existing studies generalize findings from other cultural contexts, overlooking the influence of local language proficiency differences. This gap hampers the development of targeted educational and cognitive interventions aimed at optimizing bilingual advantages. A clear understanding of how language proficiency levels relate to cognitive flexibility is essential for designing programs that leverage bilingualism to improve executive functions and academic performance (Oluwaseun, 2023; Adebayo, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To assess language proficiency levels in Nigerian bilingual individuals.

2. To evaluate the relationship between language proficiency and cognitive flexibility.

3. To develop recommendations for educational interventions that enhance cognitive flexibility.

Research Questions:

1. How does language proficiency affect cognitive flexibility in Nigerian bilinguals?

2. What is the correlation between proficiency scores and performance on executive function tasks?

3. How can educational strategies be designed to optimize bilingual cognitive benefits?

Significance of the Study :

This study is significant as it explores the interplay between language proficiency and cognitive flexibility in Nigerian bilingual individuals, offering insights to improve educational and cognitive training programs. The findings will contribute to the theoretical understanding of bilingual advantages and support interventions that enhance executive functions (Oluwaseun, 2023; Adebayo, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is limited to assessing the impact of language proficiency on cognitive flexibility in Nigerian bilingual individuals using behavioral assessments, without extending to neuroimaging measures.

Definitions of Terms:

• Language Proficiency: The level of competence in using a language effectively.

• Cognitive Flexibility: The ability to adapt and switch between cognitive tasks.

• Bilingual Individuals: People who are fluent in two languages.
